The main quest line is decent enough, but not memorable in any way. I soon gave up and consistently let those people burn without feeling the slightest bit guilty about it. I failed them time and time again because they were too hard to navigate, and the frustration was too high. The worst are the sections where Spider-Man has to rescue people from burning buildings. Movement in interior locations isn't too bad when the rooms are spacious enough to allow for good camera movement and perspective, but some places are too tight, and it's awkward to get through them. When he misses a swing or ends up in territory that's not easily navigable, the game goes full-squirrel and all sorts of wonky things happen. The rest of Amazing Spider-Man 2 was an outdated, boring project that felt obsolete as soon as I started.Īlthough I just praised Spidey's movement, it's only praiseworthy when it works. Unfortunately, that's where my compliments end. It's handy, and gives a nice level of control when desired.

When in this pause, it's possible to select a specific point in the area and have Spidey automatically zip there. I also appreciated the "web rush" which puts the world into super-slow-motion. Each of Spider-Man's hands is controlled by its own button when in the air, so it's possible to pull off some smooth-looking moves, including going around corners and varying height and trajectory on the fly. To start with the good, the game's at its best when Spidey is swinging between skyscrapers and maintaining good momentum. I found myself skipping through the convos as quickly as possible to get back to the action, although that's not to say the action is much better. The writing is low-rate stuff that's not worth the time it takes to click through, and the "choose which question to ask" segments don't seem to alter any outcomes. Not having seen the new Spider-Man film, I can't say how closely its story hews to the source material, but I can hardly imagine someone will come to this game for the plot. Despite a few touch-ups and tweaks, this creaky, tired game could easily pass for something from the very early days of the PS3, or even the PS2. I haven't played a Spider-Man game in quite some time, but after starting The Amazing Spider-Man 2 on PS4, I had an intense sense of déjà vu. WTF Do we really need to cover Uncle Ben's death again?!? LOW Repeated failures when rescuing people from burning buildings. Apparently “not stopping a crime” is equivalent to “endorsing crime.” It’s asinine, and makes the game tedious even if you’re just there to run through story content.Īnd the story? For some baffling reason Marvel or Beenox or Activision or whoever decided the story shouldn’t really match the story of the film.HIGH Swinging smoothly in a maze of skyscrapers. If you don’t, Spidey’s reputation goes down and you’re targeted by hit squads that make it an enormous pain to just swing around the city. You already won’t want to do the missions because they’re boring, but you doubly won’t want to do them when you have to sit through a loading screen each time. You swing to a location, hit a prompt to start the mission, and then sit and wait for the scene to load instead of having the events trigger organically in the world.

Many of them are the same rote, quicktime event-infested tedium we’ve seen in other Spider-Man games-stop the fleeing car full of criminals!-except here you have to load into them. There was still a sense of wonder at just moving around an enormous environment, even if you could only enter a handful of buildings and the draw distance was about a hundred feet. We’d only had two large-scale Grand Theft Auto games and a handful of knock-offs. Keep in mind, this was also an era when expansive open-world games were relatively novel.

It was easy to put up with all the dumb movie-game garbage in Spider-Man 2 because swinging around Manhattan was such a joy. Spider-Man 2 was the first game to make me feel like Spidey, which was a big deal-he’d always been one of my favorite superheroes, and I’ve long thought that web-swinging is a more interesting mode of transportation than flight.

(I think it was Vicarious by Dashboard Confessional? Different times.) I distinctly remember standing in a GameStop in New Jersey, waiting for my dad to finish up shopping at Home Depot or something, transfixed by the way the swinging worked, probably humming the song from the Spider-Man 2 trailer under my breath. Spider-Man 2 was the first game to implement a system where Spidey’s webs actually stuck to walls instead of fastening to some invisible helicopter in the sky.
